Until now I’ve been using the human nail clippers on the pups, but because they are so wiggly I managed to quick a couple of them, and the nails still stayed somewhat sharp. Now that the puppies are a little bigger, I tried using a Dremel. Just now I used a corded Dremel with a flex shaft attachment. The flex attachment is a 36-inch extension to the Dremel. I find it useful because it keeps the noise farther away from the dog, and it gives more flexibility around the nail since you only have to deal with the extension.
I used the Dremel on the lowest speed (which is 5000 rpm on mine), using a 1/4 inch 120 grit sanding band. Don held the puppy and I just had to touch the sanding band to each nail a couple times, including the dew claw. The puppies were all really good, and had no reaction beyond being fascinated with the smell of toenail dust. Sport hovered, eyes anxious, I think a little nervous about how they would react, but they were great and I told her she could be a very proud momma dog.
I use the Dremel with the extension on all the adult dogs too, only the sanding band is larger.
